Control and Treatment of Mercury

Within the Mercury & Toxics Group, the Industrial Mercury Program addresses issues related to the control of mercury from industrial processes, including coal-combustion flue gas, incinerator and kiln off gas, mercury-contaminated soil and sludge, and the stabilization of elemental mercury.

The program’s work has led to the establishment of Amended Silicates, LLC a joint venture with CH2M Hill to commercialize mercury-capture sorbents; as well as licenses with commercial clients for proprietary waste-treatment technologies.

Markets served by the Industrial Mercury Program:

  • Coal-combustion - Removal of mercury from flue gas via Amended Silicates™ sorbents
  • Coal Gasifiers - Removal of mercury and hazardous metals from coal gasifier offgas
  • Industrial Process Gases - Capture and stabilization of mercury in process gases and incinerator offgas
  • Industrial Process Liquids - Removal of mercury from industrial products and liquid streams by adsorption and precipitation
  • Industrial Process Liquids - Removal of mercury from industrial products and liquid streams by photocatalytic processes
  • Mercury Stabilization - Stabilization of elemental mercury and mercury-contaminated soil and sludge
